Siren Fishing

Category: Two-Week Story Game

Responsibilities:

  • Designed the layouts of the map. Modeled the entire level in UE5.

  • Modeled the player boat with the UE5 modeling tools.

  • Created parts for the boat in Blender.

  • Researched Modular asset packs that would contribute to the level and implemented them over block mesh

  • Set dressing with modular assets.

Inspiration:

  • Pirates of the Caribbean

  • Greek Mythology

  • Iliad and the Odyssey

Level Goals:

This project was a two-week story game assignment focused on creating an immersive environment that encouraged exploration while supporting a narrative-driven experience. The level was inspired by a blend of Pirates of the Caribbean, Greek mythology, and classic tales like The Iliad and The Odyssey. The design aimed to capture the sense of adventure and wonder associated with sailing through mythological landscapes.

My primary responsibilities included designing the map layout and modeling the entire level in Unreal Engine 5. The player’s boat, an essential part of the experience, was modeled using UE5's modeling tools, with additional components crafted in Blender to enhance its detail and modularity. The ship was designed to feel grand yet functional, with a deck close enough to the water to support the fishing mechanic.

The level begins in a bustling city hub, providing a narrative-rich starting point where the player learns about the protagonist's quest to find a cure for his daughter—a cure that can only be obtained from the sirens. From there, the world opens up, offering the player the freedom to sail across a vibrant environment filled with points of interest, including fishing islands and the mysterious siren cove. To ensure the level felt alive and engaging, I researched modular asset packs to complement the block mesh designs and used them extensively for set dressing. This approach allowed me to craft a visually appealing world that invited exploration without feeling empty.

The design focused on balancing narrative delivery, exploration, and gameplay mechanics. The city hub provided a strong starting point for the story, while the open-world elements supported a sense of freedom and discovery. This project challenged me to create an environment that could captivate players while tying the narrative and gameplay together seamlessly. It was an opportunity to refine my skills in layout design, asset integration, and environmental storytelling, all while exploring how to create spaces that inspire curiosity and adventure.
