Crafting Worlds: A Peek Into My Recent Level Design Projects

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been diving deep into Unreal Engine 5, experimenting with level design concepts and honing my craft. From short-term blockouts to an ambitious multi-route infiltration level, each project has been an opportunity to explore new ideas, refine gameplay mechanics, and push the boundaries of interactive storytelling.

This blog highlights my journey through some of my recent works, including a grand colosseum arena, a tranquil water village nestled among canals, and a mysterious forest temple brimming with ancient secrets. I’ll also take you behind the scenes of my latest ongoing project—a detailed, narrative-driven city infiltration level that has challenged me to integrate player choice, advanced traversal, and environmental storytelling like never before.

Whether you’re a fellow designer, a gamer, or just curious about the creative process, this blog offers a glimpse into the techniques, challenges, and insights that have shaped my recent work. Let’s dive in!

Colosseum:

The purpose of this project was to explore the architectural elements of a Roman Colosseum and practice turning them into a functional setting for combat and gameplay. I wanted to capture the iconic symmetry and grandeur of the structure while focusing on how these elements could shape player movement and engagement.

River Village:

This project focused on designing a river village environment inspired by real-world stilt villages, like those in Thailand. My goal was to create an open and interconnected space that felt grounded within its natural surroundings, while experimenting with modular simplicity and visual impact. The scene features wooden platforms on stilts, modular huts, small boats, and a winding river framed by dense forests to enhance the sense of scale and atmosphere.

Jungle Temple:

This project was an opportunity to explore the design of an ancient jungle temple as a focal point for an immersive environment. My aim was to capture the mysterious allure of a hidden, overgrown temple while laying the groundwork for engaging gameplay and visual storytelling. The temple’s symmetrical steps and prominent doorway were envisioned to draw the player in, sparking curiosity and a sense of adventure. Check out a deep dive on this project here

Large Scale City Breech Project

This WIP project is an exploration of multi-route level design with an emphasis on player choice and dynamic gameplay. Set in a recently overtaken city, the player must infiltrate the enemy-controlled area, retrieve a critical narrative item, and assassinate the military leader to liberate the city.
